Paswe’aatigook Anishinaabemowin

Language revitalization in Deshkan Ziibiing (Chippewas of the Thames First Nation)

Paswe’aatigook began as a language initiative led by a small group of dedicated community learners. After offering semaa (tobacco), the name Paswe’aatigook was given by Elder Richard Assinewai. Today, Paswe’aatigook represents language initiatives throughout the community of Deshkan Ziibiing and supports learners at all stages of their Anishinaabemowin journey.

Our mission is to deliver a strong, stable, and well-informed foundation in Anishinaabemowin comprehension, speech, and practices through higher education, lifelong learning, and community engagement.

“This program is important because a lot of our fluent speakers are passing on, and we’re hoping to revitalize our language because it connects us to who we are as Anishinaabe to our culture and our ceremonies.”

– Ozaawaa Giizhgo Giniw, Monty McGahey, BEd., MPed., (Chippewas of the Thames First Nation), Paswe’aatigook Program Professor

Our Vision

Our vision is “to wake up in a future with stronger language speakers, teachers, and learners who embody their own creative identity with their own individual approach to a good life; mna-bmaadziwin.

To be healthy and independent and of sound mind in our relationships with each other, other nations and all of creation.

To reassert our language and identity and to spread it to Anishinaabeg and interested allies to reverse the effects of assimilation, colonization and genocide acted upon us through Canadian Residential Schools.”

Courses & Learning Opportunities
